Rainbows of Smiles!!!

Hello everyone and Happy Tuesday. Let's see what I can share with you today. Last week, I made a life change and so far, I'm loving it!!! I started getting up at 5:00am with my husband 3 days a week. Why so early? Because I've started swimming again and it feels fantastic. I used to be in the pool 2-3 times a day when I was a little less aged lol. It is good for the soul and my energy is going up YEAH!!!

So I thought I would share with you today a project I created that also felt good to do.

This layout is full of color and I love the "non-white" space. I hope you like it too.

I used a combination of great Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist colors, Jillibean Soup alphas and Maya Road Chipboard pieces to accent the misted Pink Paislee paper.

To adhere the buttons to the layout, I used Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive. Perfect for those heavier embellishments.

That smile on the third photo is what I would see every morning I would go into our little boys room. It still melts my heart every time I see his smile.

That is it for today

Helmar Happy Fathers Day Hop

Welcome to the Helmar Happy Fathers Day Hop. Today we are so excited to share with you a variety of fantastic masculine projects. We've put our Helmar arsenal to good use and want to share with you some inspiration for those last minute Fathers Day gifts.

If you have been following along, you should have hopped here from Julie's blog. If not, hop on back to the Helmar Blog and enjoy. Make sure to leave comments along the way, because we will have prizes up for grabs. And if the Man in your life is super lucky, We may even send him a Helmar prize pack too.

Today I wanted to share with you an art project I created using Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive and Liquid Scrap Dots. These arrowheads were picked up by my husbands grandfather who recently passed. My husbands family wanted a way to display them, so I thought some shadow boxes would be perfect.

I created the papers by using a leather looking paper and distressing it with a combination of Vanilla Breeze Glimmer Mist and Tea Dye Distress Ink. I then applied it to the backing of the shadowbox using 450 Quick Dry Adhesive.

For adhering the arrowheads, Liquid Scrap Dots is perfect!!! Love how this turned out and I couldn't have done it without my Helmar Arsenal!!!

Thanks so much for stopping by. Now hop on back to the Helmar blog and leave one last comment. If you get lost along the way, below you will find the links for the order of the hop.

Trinity Paper Arts- Sincerely

The new papers from Trinity Papers Arts are so much fun to work with. I love the deep wine tones and black/white combo that comes in the Sincerely collection. Today I've got a layout to share with you using this collection, Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist and Prima Flowers.

I did a lot of edge distressing and hand dyed the flowers with a combination of Cranberry and True Blood Glimmer Mists for the perfect match.

Fearless Friends in Art Guest Blogger Series- Jamie Dougherty

Hello everyone and welcome to another wonderful Fearless Friends in Art Guest Blogger series post. Today I'm so amazingly honored to have a mentor, idol and friend sharing. The very first time I saw this ladies work on the Tattered Angels blog, I was blown away. Her art made me want to be more creative myself and it was because of her work that I grabbed my first bottles of Glimmer Mist (which is now a full blown addition lol). I was so very blessed this past January to meet this bright light in person and let me tell you, she is as good as they get. A gentle soul, who is following her dreams and gives me the strength everyday to embrace myself as an artist. Without further adieu, I bring you Jamie Dougherty...

Hi everyone :) I am honored to be a guest on the beautiful Miss Erika's Blog today. If you ask her, she'll tell you I'm somewhat of a schizophrenic artist. No I don't have multiple personalities telling me to paint the canvas, more like multiple things I want to do. I love to paint, scrapbook, mixed media, I even like to write. I love to try new things and find that it keeps my ideas fresh. My mom often asks how I keep track of all the stuff I do. Well, I really don't have an answer for that lol. If I did, it would probably scare you, heck I'd probably scare me!

Here is a project I recently finished, I would like to share and give a few techniques and products I used to create it.

I used a 12 x 24" Canvas Corp. canvas to paint this mixed media piece. I started by sketching the girls face onto the canvas. The canvas is raw so I was able to erase any mistakes I made while sketching. I then used Prismacolor Watercolor pencils to color her face. Next I used Black Gesso (Golden Mediums) and painted the rest of the canvas. Once the gesso was dried I used Molding Paste (Tip: Molding Paste is an awesome medium to use with stencils and masks to create diminution on a scrapbook page) and blended it with Acrylic paint I used a palette knife and applied it as her hair. Once that set a bit I blended white gesso into it to create the highlights in her hair. This also helps smooth out the molding paste a bit. I used Some of Prima's Vintage Trinkets and flowers, to give her a head piece. her little crown is a Canvas Corp banner. I added details to her eyes with India Ink and White Opaque Copic paint.

This piece makes me want to do a Digital piece with the same style. Might have to try that. ;)

Mixed Media is popular right now in the crafting industry and the same artistic techniques can also be used when scrapbooking. Use the prismacolor watercolors on a patterned paper to add dimension. Or use Gesso as a background to a photo. Use India Ink to outline your page or doodle a fun design, there are so many possibilities. Don't be afraid to try something new and step outside of your comfort zone. :)

Thank you for letting me visit Erika!

If you would like to see more of my work, or learn more about my book, you can find me here:

Thank you

And have a creative weekend
Jamie D.

Fearless Friends in Art Guest Blogger Series- JJ SOBEY!!!

Hello everyone and welcome to my first post for the Fearless Friends in Art Guest Blogger Series. After going to CHA this past month, I came home with a renewed sense of self. A sense of knowing that there are so many artists out there that are good, real people. The type of people that you WANT to know, WANT to help and WANT in your life.

I couldn't ask for a sweeter, more genuine artist than JJ Sobey for this first post and considering what my guest post on Dawn's blog was about yesterday, I know this post is meant to be.JJ and I (we both believe) were separated at birth lol. Please take a moment and add this amazing artist to your reader, blog roll or network blogs list. Without further adieu, My first guest blogger... JJ Sobey!!!

When Erika asked me to do a guest post on her blog, I was flattered (immensely). I started planning a project to show to everyone here today, and wondering what I would talk about. Then it hit me on Thursday (about 6 hours before I was due to send her my post) that perhaps I needed to go in a different direction.

We need to talk.

The words creative and artistic scare the crap out of me. My teen years were my most creative time – I sang, played piano, wrote music, wrote short stories, wrote plays, was in theatre, and the list goes on. But it was also a very dark time for me – I was fighting a deep depression through all of it.

It took a long time and medical intervention to come out of it. And at the same time I took it into my head that the creativity was part of the problem. I felt that if I shut it out of my life, I would have more of a chance to get out of my depression. So I stopped being creative. I turned my back on the arts, and tried to ignore the creative urges. And I succeeded for a while, and I thought (mistakenly - I was in my early 20’s), that this was what made things ‘better’.

It didn’t make it ‘better’, by the way. Medication for the chemical imbalance in my brain is what made it better. I was lucky though – I was one of the ones who didn’t have to remain on it for the rest of my life.

For years, every time someone ‘accused’ me of being creative, I got nervous. I wondered if they saw signs, which I hadn’t yet recognized, of a returning depression. I would back off from the ‘creative’ activity, and try to hide from art. I would deny that I was creative – it felt like a sentence, not a compliment. Like it was something I should be ashamed of. I feared art.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is something that I struggle with every winter, and it’s just as real as other forms of depression. And it’s hard. Because when I start to feel more creative in the winter, I fear that the full-blown, not-going-to-go-away depression is coming back.

I’m trying very hard to come to terms with being an artist. I’m trying to own it. But it scares the hell out of me – I have so much baggage associated with that word.

Over the past year, I have discovered that I am not alone. Many, many creative people deal with depression – creativity is sometimes a symptom of the depression itself. For many, to receive that creativity means having to also take the depression that brought it on. I now realize that the creativity is not the cause, but the result, and perhaps it’s the universe’s way of compensating a little bit for the pain.

So why did I feel the need to bring this up today? Most people won’t ask for help even though asking for help is not a sign of weakness – it’s courageous; and often those who refuse to ask, are the ones who need it most. But we don’t talk about this – there’s a stigma attached to it, for some strange reason.

We, as artists, and crafters, and mothers, and sisters, and daughters and friends, we need to talk about this. Because you may be surprised just how many people you already know, who are going through this in silence. Embrace their art, and then embrace the person who created it – they might really need your support, but will never ask.

If you’ve made it this far – thank you for reading! Feel free to come visit my blog – I promise that I don’t get on my soapbox very often. J

Dixie Pieces February Kit- Coloring Book

I love kits!!! The fact that someone else takes the time to make them and select matching goodies is amazing. Especially when you receive a kit that BLOWS YOUR MIND!!!!

Hey everyone, I'm here today to share with you the new Dixie Pieces February kit called Coloring Book. This kit is filled with wonderful black and white prints and a handful of color to give it that extra POP.

I'm absolutely loving the papers from Canvas Corp and Doodlebug Designs. These are such great quality papers and are beautiful to alter with color. Here are my projects I created for this months kit.

This first layout was colored using Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists and I love that it went from black and white to rainbow. I created the banner from the felt that is included in the Coloring Book Kit.

Next a Black a white layout with a pop of color. I think this is a favorite photo of our daughter. Balloons are really fun aren't they???

How about a little card too? I used some Worn Lipstick distress ink to give this one a little color.

Now I have one more layout as well, but I've got that posted on Dawn's Blog today. She was so sweet to ask me to Guest Blog a while back and I am honored that she asked. It is a little personal, but I speak up about my depression. So make me smile and head over there to see it and leave some love.

The Robins Nest Mothers Layouts with Dew Drops

Have you seen the new Classified collection from The Robins Nest. It is full of beautiful patterns, blacks and white and is so versatile. Hey there everyone, I'm here today to share with you a layout I created using some wonderful products from The Robins Nest. I used the Glitter Black and White Border Swirl, Gold Paisley on Black and Parisian Mini Dew Drops.

Firstly, I misted the entire sheet of Glitter Black and White Swirl with Glimmer Mist. Then I added white pen to some of the swirls for a really great look. The Paisleys were cut out and adhered with Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive to really make sure they are not going anywhere.

Here are a few photos for you

Here is a wonderful close up of the Gold Paisley Papers. This is becoming a top favorite of mine. It also comes in Silver too!!!

Here you can really see the fussy cutting and the swirls I created with the Parisian Mini Dew Drops

The Robins Nest papers really work beautifully with mists and paints and I love how this one turned out. Take a look at some of the new items at The Robins Nest and try your hand at altering papers today. Thanks so much for stopping in. I hope I've given you a little inspiration.
Until next time

The Robin's Nest and Helmar do Valentines Day

Valentines Day is just around the corner and what better way to celebrate than with a little GLITTER!!! Hey there everyone,I'm here today to share with you a Valentines card I created using some amazing papers from The Robins Nest.

For this card I selected Teal Glitter Card Stock, Glitter Cream Animal Print and Red on Red Rope papers. I'm adore the combination of creams, whites, reds and teal here. With that hint of black for contrast. To add a little bling to the card, I used Metallic Red Dew Drops. I love how well the glitter papers adhere together using Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive. The Dew Drops are adhered using Helmar Gemstone Glue.

I died the bow with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Bahama Blue/Jazz Blue.

And now for the full card. I love how that little Metallic Dew Drop makes the perfect "O".

Perhaps a little unconventional for a Valentines card color wise, but I know that my husband is going to love it.

Thanks so very much for stopping by today. Don't forget, if you are attending CHA this coming week, stop by The Robins Nest at booth #1656 as well as the Helmar Booth #1262 where I'll be for the whole show.

Until next time

2011 Favorite Projects- Happy New Years Eve

I love the idea of sharing your favorite projects from the year passing. There have been so many precious moments this year and I have been blessed with them. With precious moments comes a fair share of hardships as well and I'm looking forward to a new year, a fresh beginning and a road not traveled.

So here are my projects to share today, showcasing some of my favorite products as well.A new way for me to ring in the new year creatively. Thanks to all my friends that do this already. You have giving me a new tradition...

This was one of my first canvases of the year and now that I've tried it, I'm in love with canvas!!!
Using my Favorite Tattered Angels colors to date...

In February, I tried my hand at making a braided headband for our little monkey Morgan. I used some wonderful ribbons from Really Reasonable Ribbon. Just a little shout out to Bonnie for having me be a part of your design team for the time I was on. I so enjoyed being a part of RRR.

March was a tough month for me and I did what I could to keep afloat. So having to create a project about your favorite feature for TAAFOMFT challenge blog was a perfect little pick me up. (Thank you Julie for being a friend and for having me be a part of your baby)

April finally brought my husband to us. Being apart was really hard for so many reasons. I thank God every day for having my husband, even on those days that were so so difficult. April also was my husbands birthday month and I created a card for him using one of my favorite paper collections to date from Paper Trunk.

May...So nice to be close to my mom for Mothers Day. So to honor my Mommy, I created this layout using Bo Bunny papers. I think it is my favorite layout of the YEAR!!!

June is when I finally got diagnosed with depression and I'm so so grateful that I'm on medication and can now see the forest through the trees. What a difference a few changes can make in ones life.So for June I couldn't help but pick this card. The message is clear and Nikki Sivils always makes me smile with her collections, her smile and her kindness.

July brought a guest designer spot with Donna Salazar and talk about excited!!! I love Donnas Girlie Grunge collections and had a tonne of fun with this one. My favorite was this card with a butterfly. I love butterflies!!!

But wait!!!! I also got to be a guest designer with Darkroom Door and LLLLLLOOOOVVVVEEEEE their stamps so July is a two-fer. Ain't this one purdy!!!

August brought a little accident to the family. My wonderful Mom broke her hip and although that was horrible, something wonderful came out of it. I started spending more time with mom and our relationship changed. She is one of my best friends now and I Love her to pieces. This project was my favorite for August. A beautiful stamp from I Brake for Stamps. I paired it with some great papers from Lily Bee Designs.

September was back to school month and both our monkeys were excited about it. They are growing up a little more every day ~sigh~. I started to think about doing a Life List Journal thanks to a great friend Tracy. This is the front cover of the journal and my favorite project for September. All put together with my love an Helmar love too!

October brings Halloween hehehe. I love Halloween and created a neat little tag using some Glimmer Mist and some Fancy Pants. I think every time I say the word Fancy Pants, I grin ear to ear. Love this company.

November already??? Christmas is right around the corner but I'm still stuck on Halloween.I love autumn colors and decided to create a large canvas piece using some of my favorite pieces from Basically Bare. This piece is proudly displayed on the main level of our home for everyone to see.

The end of the year is here and with that brings December, snow and family. Christmas was simply perfect and I'm so blessed to have my health, my loving family, and a new appreciation for my husband.

December brings out the kid in me and I so enjoyed this 1st little piece using purdy glitter and Helmar. The second little ornament is made from those super sweet little Dew Drops from The Robins Nest. Man am I excited to be a part of this team now.

Well there ya have it, My ode to 2011. I truly am blessed to have each of you in my life and along for the journey. We have many things in common even though we may not think so. Thank you for being there, for giving me a reason to get up and go some mornings and for sharing your lives with me. Until next year...

A Vintage Noel Card

What can I say, I'm a Timmy fan and his 12 tags of Christmas always gets my attention. So when that first tag came out, I had the perfect piece of canvas goodness to create it with. Hi everyone, I'm here today to share with you my take on Tag 1 this year.

For this card I used the smallest canvas banner and first sprayed it with Vanilla Breeze Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist. Before it was completely dry, I stamped the banner with a postage stamp I have. The ink ran to really give a vintage feel. LOVE IT!!! Pretty Pretty Pretty I say

I love how easy it is to fold and manipulate these canvas pieces. To create the dimension, I used Helmar Liquid Scrap Dots. This helped lift the folds to give them that height I was looking for.

Isn't the color of that banner sweet? Against all that cool winter colors, it really gives the card a POP. Now take a look at those beautiful silver flower embellishments. The so reminded me of pointsettias, so out they came. They are from Creative Charms and went perfectly on this card. In the Antique Flower Medley pack, there are both gold and silver flowers. YUMMO!!!

One more picture hehe, showing the banner and flower a little closer. You can also see the Glimmer Mist on the foliage too.

The perfect additions to any Vintage card I'm positive. These canvas banners and Vintage Flower Medleys are so pretty to work with and I love how the end result always blows my mind.

Thanks so much for stopping by today. Let me know what you think. I adore your comments here on the blog, so don't be shy!!!

Until Next Time
